What To Expect

Prime Day is filled with thousands upon thousands of Lightning deals cycling between every few minutes to every few seconds during peak hours. Prime Day happens all over the world and not just in the US. Last year’s biggest sellers were Amazon devices: Echos, Dots, and Kindles. Viral-type items like the Instant Pot pressure cooker as well as 23andme DNA test kits were also popular. You can expect tons of Black Friday level deals on TVs, electronics, computers and gaming components. However stock is typically extremely limited so don’t hesitate too long. We also anticipate that Amazon will be pushing a lot of their Amazon branded items like clothing, AmazonBasics accessories, as well as services such as Audible or Amazon Music and more.

How to Prepare

We think of Prime day much as we think of Black Friday, so you can expect a ton of discounts but not necessarily on the exact item you want. Be prepared to find competitive pricing on similar brands. We suggest to do the following:

  • Make a wish list of what you want: not just items you want but staples that you may need. We can’t tell you how many discounted household goods are cheaper than almost any other time of the year. You can bet renewable or subscription based items will have a steep discount.
  • Do your price research: Not everything is a great deal. Some items work simply from impulse buys or because you’ve now discovered a new product. We recommend doing some quick price research and keeping note of it as we may see lower prices at other times of the year.
  • Research your category: You may have your eye on the same 32″ HDTV on Prime day as on Black Friday, but you might not necessarily get the exact deal you want. In fact you may find a better value on an different brand or size than you were looking for. It is not unusual for us to find a 46″ HDTV the same price as a 40″ HDTV during a sale so you may miss out on the best deals and values by having restrictive requirements.
  • Add Must have items to your Amazon Cart. Amazon will typically show you price changes at the top of your Amazon shopping cart for items that have changed in price. You can use this to your advantage on Prime Day.
  • Enable Alexa shopping. Every year, Amazon has attempted to get more users shopping through Alexa enabled devices and each year the stakes rise and the discounts get steeper. We expect more of the same so make sure you have your account set to 1-Click purchase and Alexa enabled to purchase for voice.

Predictions

We’ve been through all the Prime Days and here are our predictions based on past trends and where we believe Amazon may be heading as a business and in technology.

  • Free Money: in the form of Amazon Gift Card. Amazon always gives a discount on an Amazon Gift Card deal that sells out quickly. Be sure to log in the AM or check back here to find out where Amazon has it hidden (it’s not easily accessible).
  • AI Guided Shopping. Users have complained about how terrible the user experience is when trying to find deals on Prime Day. You can expect that Amazon will use all the data they have on you to show you deals that are highly relevant to your preferences and maybe even some at a price point you’ll buy at.
  • Amazon Prime Day will be EVEN LONGER. Prime Day is one of their biggest sale events of the year. To make it bigger, we expect it to be 36-hours or more and to see fewer server debacles from traffic.
  • Alexa Skills discounts on Uber, Dominos and more. Amazon has a problem with users continuing to use their Alexa devices. We don’t think it’s farfetched that they will work out relationships with Uber or Dominos to give users discounts to drive awareness of these Alexa skills and get you to use it.
  • Smartphone deals? Not many people think of Amazon when they think of smartphones, but it is one of the most convenient places to buy a smartphone with no contract. We regularly see best of web pricing on Amazon and they carry their own Prime Exclusive smartphones that we are sure will see some of the best pricing of the year.
  • More Amazon Devices. No surprise here but Amazon will be discounted to some of the best prices: Amazon takes this opportunity to get more of their users in their device ecosystem. Echos, Fire Sticks and Tablets are always on sale. We expect to see their newer items like the Amazon Key, Camera, Show and more discounted. We are hoping to see a discount on the Amazon Cube TV in particular.
  • Retailers are going to strike back. All the big ecommerce giants will want a piece of the Prime Day pie. While others have tried to do a Black Friday in July type event, none have managed to achieve what Prime Day has. Amazon’s Prime day has changed shopping behavior by creating a Black Friday tier seasonal event. We expect Walmart, Best Buy, Rakuten, eBay, Groupon and other retailers to make a big splash before and after Prime Day to ride off the Amazon’s success.
