Animal Jam was hacked, and data stolen; here’s what parents need to know

maxresdefault

WildWorks,  the gaming company that makes the popular kids game Animal Jam, has confirmed a data breach.

Animal Jam is one of the most popular games for kids, ranking in the top five games in the 9-11 age category in Apple’s App Store in the U.S., according to data provided by App Annie. But while no data breach is ever good news, WildWorks has been more forthcoming about the incident than most companies would be, making it easier for parents to protect both their information and their kids’ data.

Here’s what we know.

WildWorks said in a detailed statement that a hacker stole 46 million Animal Jam records in early October but that it only learned of the breach in November.

The company said someone broke into one of its systems that the company uses for employees to communicate with each other, and accessed a secret key that allowed the hacker to break into the company’s user database. The bad news is that the stolen data is known to be circulating on at least one cybercrime forum, WildWorks said, meaning that malicious hackers may use (or be using) the stolen information.

The stolen data dates back to over the past 10 years, the company said, so former users may still be affected.

Much of the stolen data wasn’t highly sensitive, but the company warned that 32 million of those stolen records had the player’s username, 23.9 million records had the player’s gender, 14.8 million records contained the player’s birth year and 5.7 million records had the player’s full date of birth.

But, the company did say that the hacker also took 7 million parent email addresses used to manage their kids’ accounts. It also said that 12,653 parent accounts had a parent’s full name and billing address, and 16,131 parent accounts had a parent’s name but no billing address.

Besides the billing address, the company said no other billing data — such as financial information — was stolen.

WildWorks also said that the hacker stole players’ passwords, prompting the company to reset every player’s password. (If you can’t log in, that’s probably why. Check your email for a link to reset your password.) WildWorks didn’t say how it scrambled passwords, which leaves open the possibility that they could be unscrambled and potentially used to break into other accounts that have the same password as used on Animal Jam. That’s why it’s so important to use unique passwords for each site or service you use, and use a password manager to store your passwords safely.

The company said it was sharing information about the breach with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.

So what can parents do?

  • Troy Hunt, a security researcher and owner of Have I Been Pwned, a website that helps you find out if you’re a victim of a data breach, has already obtained a copy of the stolen data. That means anyone can go to Have I Been Pwned and check to see if they are a victim of the Animal Jam breach.
  • Thankfully the data associated with kids accounts is limited. But parents, if you have used your Animal Jam password on any other website, make sure you change those passwords to strong and unique passwords so that nobody can break into those other accounts.
  • If you need help safely and securely storing or generating strong passwords, use a password manager.
  • Keep an eye out for scams related to the breach. Malicious hackers like to jump on recent news and events to try to trick victims into turning over more information or money in response to a breach.

Every Retailer That Has Filed Bankruptcy in 2020

Back in 2019, about 17 major retailers filed for brankruptcy, which resulted in over 9,500 store closures. While that may seem like a lot, 2020 is shaping up to be even more of a challenge for retailers, as 27 major retailers have already filed for bankruptcy, and we still have a few more months of the year left.

Though many of the retailers on the list below were already facing financial hardship, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has made matters even worse.

Major Retailers That Filed Bankruptcy in 2020

Stein Mart

  • Filing Date: August 12

Baring a last-minute acquistion, Stein Mart plans to liquidate all 280+ locations nationwide.

Back in March, Modell’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with the plans of liquidating its entire 134 store fleet, as well as sell its IP.

JCPenney

  • Filing Date: May 15

JCPenney filed for bankruptcy with the support of key lenders with a plan that could lead to multiple outcomes. Whether that plan leads to reorganization, sale, or possible liquidation, only time will tell.

Walmart+ Launches Soon: Everything You Need to Know

Walmart drops lawsuit against Tesla over solar panel fires - The Verge

Walmart is launching their own version of Amazon Prime, dubbed Walmart+, on September 15. Below I’ve listed everything you need to know about the new service to help you decide whether to sign up for it or not.

Meet Walmart+

This brand new, paid-membership will compete with Amazon Prime by offering exclusive deals and perks, as well as free delivery. Walmart+ costs $98 per year, or $12.95 per month; however, you can also snag a free 15-day trial before fully committing.

Perks of Walmart+ includes the following:

  • Same-day delivery of groceries and more
  • Early access to select deals
  • Members can use “Scan & Go” touch-free checkout via the Walmart app
  • Save up to 5¢ per gallon at over 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA & Murphy Express stations

How Walmart+ Could Beat Amazon Prime

Perhaps the most obvious place where Walmart+ beats Amazon Prime is the price. Since Walmart+ costs only $98 per year, it already has a leg up over Prime, which currently costs $119 per year. By keeping the price under $100, Walmart is opening the door to new customers not ready to spend over $100 a year on a free delivery service. Even the price of Walmart+ per month is slightly cheaper, $12.95 vs. Prime’s $12.99 monthly fee — though in either instance it’s cheaper to shell out for the yearly subscription in the long run.

It’s no secret that Amazon boasts thousands upon thousands of items on their site. You can get anything from auto parts to groceries. However, Walmart+ will seek to compete with Amazon by offering exclusive deals on prescription medication, which Prime cannot offer. In addition, members will also save on gasoline at participating gas stations, which Amazon cannot offer either.

Though Amazon does offer groceries, Walmart+ has a chance to really out-preform AmazonFresh in the grocery market. Due to their physical presence nationwide, Walmart will be able to offer groceries at a much lower price than Amazon. Some rumors even state that you’ll be able to text Walmart your grocery order and receive them within an hour or so.

Where Walmart+ May Fail to Beat Amazon Prime

One area in which Walmart+ may fail to really take root is in the fact that Walmart and Amazon shoppers are very different. A recent ShopperScape survery found that the average household income for a Walmart shopper is around $76,000 per year, compared to the $84,000 average for Amazon shoppers. Typically the lower end, middle-income households shopping at Walmart are not interested in paying for shopping club subscriptions. Plus, with a Walmart in nearly every neighborhood nowadays, the average Walmart shopper may prefer to go to the actual store to get what they need.

If Walmart+ is solely a delivery service, then it may fall short to consumers.

Another potential issue where Walmart+ may fail is in the fact that Amazon Prime offers much more than just free delivery. With your Prime subscription, you have access to Prime video and music, both of which offer unlimited streaming of popular and original content. Prime also offers other exclusive features such as unlimited photo storage through Prime photos and more. If Walmart+ is solely a delivery service, then it may fall short to consumers.

What do you think of Walmart’s new service? Do you think it has the potential to compete with Amazon Prime? Let us know in the comments below.

Payless is Re-Opening in November!

After filing for bankruptcy and shuttering all 2,100 locations back in 2019, the discount shoe chain, Payless, is making a comeback.

That’s right — the retailer recently announced plans to open 300 to 400 standalone shops nationwide in the next three to five years. Even better, the first shop is slated to open as early as November 2020 in Miami, which is where the company’s new headquarters are located. From there, the shoe chain plans to open 30 to 45 stores in early 2021 in Texas, and other bordering states.

Payless emphasizes that these new stores will feature an “updated” look, which includes installing smart mirrors, AR-powered foot comparison charts, and touchscreen wall panels.

Can’t wait for a location to open near you? Payless just re-launched their website, featuring a mix of clothing and footwear from private label brands, as well as new brands such as Kendall + Kylie and Aerosoles.

During a time when many retail giants are falling left and right due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s good to see a once shuttered store trying to make a comeback. Afterall, when Payless filed for bankruptcy back in 2019, they had to let go of 16,000 employees nationwide. Though the retailer will never reach the amount of stores it once had, at least it can offer new jobs to some of those laid off employees over the next few years.

What do you think of Payless making a comeback? Let us know in the comments below.

Amazon May Take Over Old JCPenneys and Sears to Try and Speed Up Deliveries

Amazon May Take Over Old JCPenneys and Sears to Try and Speed Up Deliveries

Amazon may replace closed department stores at struggling malls.

The company is in talks with Simon Property Group (SPG), the largest mall owner in the United States, to convert former or current JCPenney (JCP) and Sears (SHLDQ) stores into distribution hubs to deliver packages, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday. Both retail chains have filed for bankruptcy (Sears has since emerged from Chapter 11) and are closing hundreds of stores. Simon malls have 63 JCPenney and 11 Sears stores, according to its most recent public filing.
The deal could make sense for both Amazon and Simon as the e-commerce landscape shifts and many traditional brick-and-mortar stores are in collapse.
Amazon (AMZN) wants more space closer to where customers live as it builds out its one-day delivery strategy. Malls are typically located closer to highways and residential areas than mammoth warehouses, which would allow Amazon to speed up shipping times to customers.
Mall owners need cash-rich tenants to replace their bankrupt anchor stores. Although Amazon warehouses won’t be attracting much foot traffic, they’ll help to pay the bills.
“It is a win-win for both sides,” said Chris Walton, a former Target (TGT)executive and now CEO of the retail blog Omni Talk. “Simon gets an anchor tenant and Amazon gets a more localized fulfillment center. For Amazon, the deal would also give it “a front row seat into developing the mall infrastructure for the future.”
It isn’t clear how many stores are under consideration for Amazon, and it is possible that the two sides may fail to reach an agreement, the Journal reported, citing people briefed on the matter. Amazon declined to comment to CNN Business. Simon did not respond to a request for comment.
The talks between Amazon and Simon reflect a growing trend in the retail industry of stores and malls turning into warehouses.
“Underperforming retail sites have become an ideal location for last-mile warehouse developers,” real estate research firm CBRE said in a report last month. “The disruption to the retail sector and the growth of e-commerce will continue to increase the viability” of these conversions.

KFC Suspending Use of ‘Finger Lickin’ Good’ in Advertising Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

KFC Suspending Use of 'Finger Lickin' Good' in Advertising Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

Fried chicken chain KFC is hitting pause on one of fast food’s most popular slogans.

The restaurant said Monday it will suspend use of “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good” in its advertising after 64 years.

In a statement, KFC said during an unprecedented year during which the COVID-19 pandemic has upended businesses and lives around the globe, use of the slogan “doesn’t feel quite right.”

“We find ourselves in a unique situation – having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current environment,” said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, global chief marketing officer at KFC, in a statement. “While we are pausing the use of It’s Finger Lickin’ Good, rest assured the food craved by so many people around the world isn’t changing one bit.”

Pandemic shopping:Americans are buying Mace, RVs, bulk foods as COVID-19 pandemic drags on

Financial aid:Odds could be in your favor in request for more financial aid — but don’t wait

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of the steps people can take to protect themselves from spreading COVID-19 is washing hands often, and keeping hands away from your mouth, nose, and eyes.

KFC said the slogan will not go away forever. The chain said they will bring it back “when the time is right.”
