Major Retailer Reopening Plans for COVID-19

Major Retailer Reopening Plans for COVID-19

For the past two or so months, many shopping centers and nonessential stores have remained closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, nearly every state has relaxed their stay-at-home orders, which in turn is allowing more and more retailers to reopen.

Let’s dive into the reopening plans of the major retailers listed below.

Apple Stores

Apple reopened nearly two dozen stores before Memorial Day weekend 2020. More and more stores will continue to reopen nationwide. You should call your local store [store locator] to find out if your location is open.

Face coverings are required for all customers and employees in the stores that are now opened. In addition, the number of customers allowed inside at one time is limited. Apple released this statement, “We’re focused on limiting occupancy and giving everybody lots of room, and renewing our focus on one‑on‑one, personalized service at the Genius Bar and throughout the store.”

Curbside pickup is available at nearly every reopened location.

Bath & Body Works

Over the last week or so, Bath & Body Works has started reopening locations nationwide. You can find which locations are open here.

The company has implemented many safety precautions in the opening locations, which includes providing hand sanitizers to customers, limiting the number of customers allowed in-store, and installing floor markings to maintain social distancing. In addition, all employees must wear masks and undergo wellness checks.

Best Buy

Though most Best Buy stores remained opened during the coronavirus pandemic, they were only open for curbside pickup services. Back in May, the retailer began allowing in-store shopping at select locations — however, it came with a catch. These reopened locations are only offering in-store shopping via appointment.

Customers can schedule a time to come in-store and browse the shelves with the help of an employee. These time slots are limited and must be made in advanced via online, the Best Buy app, or over the phone. Once you have a time slot, you will receive a call from a Best Buy associate that will walk your through the in-store consultation process, as well as all the safety measures in place.

More and more stores across the nation will open to in-store shopping via these new consultation appointments.

Costco

Essential retailers, like Costco, were able to keep their doors open during the coronavirus crisis. However, these same stores were operating under limited hours. Back in May, most Costco locations switched back to their normal operating hours. Though, most locations will continue to offer a dedicated shopping time for senior citizens from 9am to 10am Monday through Friday.

In additional, all Costco shoppers and team members must wear a face mask in-store.

Macy’s

Back on April 30th, Macy’s announced during a video conference call that they were planning to reopen 68 locations by Monday, May 4th. Now, by mid-June, the retailer  expects to reopen all of its 750 stores nationwide.

In order to make this happen, Macy’s is implementing a number of safety precautions. For instance, all workers are required to wear cloth masks, some services will not be available (such as ear-piercing), and customers will not be able to try on certain types of garments. In addition, the company is installing protective plexiglass at their checkout areas.

GAP

On May 6th, GAP announced that they were planning on reopening all of their 800 locations by the end of the month. For the most part, nearly all of these locations are now reopened, including GAP stores, Old Navy, Athleta, and Banana Republic.

Like many other retailers, these reopened locations are operating under new safety precautions, which includes “rigorous cleaning routines”, the addition of social distancing signage, and requiring all employees to wear face masks while in-store.

Starbucks

Select Starbucks locations have remained open for the last few weeks, however only for drive-thru services. More locations are now reopening and expanding services. Which locations are reopened is really just a case-by-case basis. You should contact your local shop [store locator] before going.

It will be awhile before you can order a coffee or snack and sit inside a Starbucks. Though depending on your local regulations, you should be able to place an order via the app and pickup your order real soon. Most Starbucks drive-thrus are still open.

TJ Maxx

TJX, which owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods, announced back on May 9th that they were planning to reopen many of their stores within the next few weeks. Now which locations that have actually reopened depends heavily upon local regulations. It’s best to contact your nearest store [store locator] before heading over.

Not all hand sanitizers work against it – here’s what you should use

COVID-19: Not all hand sanitizers work against it – here’s what you should useWith shortages leading some people to try and make their own hand sanitizers, it’s also important to know these might not be as effective as commercially available products.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, sales of hand sanitizers have soared. It’s become such a sought-after product that pharmacies and supermarkets have started limiting the number that people can buy at one time. New York state has even announced it will start producing its own hand sanitizer to meet demand. Though hand sanitizers can help reduce our risk of catching certain infections, not all hand sanitizers are equally effective against coronavirus.

As with other viral respiratory infections – like the common cold and flu – the novel coronavirus (called SARS-CoV-2) is mainly spread when virus-laden droplets from a person’s mouth or nose are transferred to other people. However, a recent study has suggested that it can also spread through feces.

Aside from inhaling droplets, you can also get respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2 by touching anything contaminated with the virus and then touching your face, in particular your mouth or nose. We touch our faces a lot without even realizing it. A study from New South Wales found that people touch their faces about 23 times an hour

Washing with warm water and soap remains the gold standard for hand hygiene and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Washing with warm water (not cold water) and soap removes oils from our hands that can harbor microbes.

But hand sanitizers can also protect against disease-causing microbes, especially in situations when soap and water aren’t available. They’re also proven to be effective in reducing the number and type of microbes.

There are two main types of hand sanitizers: alcohol-based and alcohol-free. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers contain varying amounts and types of alcohol, often between 60 percent and 95 percent and usually isopropyl alcohol, ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or n-propanol. Alcohol is known to be able to kill most germs.

Alcohol-free hand sanitizers contain something called quarternary ammonium compounds (usually benzalkonium chloride) instead of alcohol. These can reduce microbes but are less effective than alcohol.

Not only are alcohol-based hand sanitizers found to be effective at killing many types of bacteria, including MRSA and E coli, they’re also effective against many viruses, including the influenza A virus, rhinovirus, hepatitis A virus, HIV, and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Destroying viruses

Alcohol attacks and destroys the envelope protein that surrounds some viruses, including coronaviruses. This protein is vital for a virus’s survival and multiplication. But a hand sanitizer needs to be at least 60% alcohol in order to kill most viruses.

Hand sanitizers with less than 60 percent alcohol were also found to be less effective at killing bacteria and fungi and may only reduce the growth of germs rather than killing them outright.

And even hand sanitizers containing 60 percent alcohol can’t remove all types of germs. Studies have found that hand washing is more effective than hand sanitizers at removing norovirus, Cryptosporidium (a parasite that can cause diarrhea), and Clostridium difficile (bacteria which cause bowel problems and diarrhea).

With shortages leading some people to try and make their own hand sanitizers, it’s also important to know these might not be as effective as commercially available products.

Washing hands for 20 seconds with warm water works best.

If hands are visibly dirty, hand washing with soap and water is more effective than using alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Research has found that the detergent effect of soap and the friction of washing work together to reduce the number of microbes on our hands, as well as the dirt and organic materials.

Sneezing or coughing into your hands also requires more than just a pump of hand sanitizer to disinfect them. This is because if your hands are contaminated with mucous, the hand sanitizer might not work as well because mucous acts to protect microbes.

As a result, the best and most consistent way of preventing the spread of the coronavirus – and reducing your risk of contracting it – remains washing your hands with soap and water as a first choice, and avoiding touching your face as much as possible.

But alcohol-based hand sanitizers (with at least 60 percent alcohol) are a practical alternative when soap and water aren’t available. If you are using hand sanitizer then, just like when washing with soap and water, you need to make sure you cover your hands (including between your knuckles, wrists, palms, back of your hand and your fingernails) fully, rubbing it in for at least 20 seconds so it’s truly effective.

USING YOUR KIDS’ DEBIT CARDS TO TALK ABOUT MONEY THIS SUMMER

My twin daughter’s Malina and Phylicia’s customized Greenlight debit cards

The money talk — not as scary as the birds and bees, but still a big deal.  In fact, 49% of parents say they’re not sure how to explain money to their kids [1]. Enter: Summer Break. More time at home means more time to talk about money management. Follow along for some conversation starters and tips on how to have the money talk.

EXPLAIN WHY BUDGETING IS IMPORTANT

79% of Americans keep a budget [2], which is great. Budgets may be a bit more involved for grownups, but that doesn’t mean your kids can’t start learning the basics. How? Start off by explaining why budgeting matters. There’s a good chance they’re already wondering that.

Conversation Starter: “What’s something you really want but you haven’t had the money to buy?” Maybe it’s something you can’t fit into your parent budget, or maybe it’s something you think they should buy on their own. During the summer, there are lots of opportunities for your kids to make money — help them figure out how to manage their earnings.

BREAK DOWN COMMON BUDGETING TERMS

Fixed expenses and variable expenses — ring a bell? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, these are important words to teach your kids about budgeting. Break it down into Summer Break terms and they’ll get it.

Conversation Starter: “A fixed expense is one that doesn’t change. Like, our Netflix subscription. It’s the same price every month. A variable expense is one that does change. Like, a meal at a restaurant. It can go up or down, depending on where we eat.”

TALK ABOUT SAVING MONEY

Budgeting for Summer Break is one thing — saving for it is another. Instead of handing over a wad of cash and hoping they stash it away, make it a hands-on experience with a bit of fun along the way.

Conversation Starter: “Saving money lets you buy things that you might not have enough money for right now. When you add a little bit of money to your savings over time, it adds up so you can buy those things one day.” Tip: Help your kids make a savings goal (or better, lots of goals). Then, work together to plan out how they’ll reach that goal.

GIVE KIDS THEIR OWN DEBIT CARD

The fun part about the money talk is giving your kids their own debit card. Unlike a credit card, they can only spend what’s on it. The best part? They won’t realize that they’re learning valuable lessons every time they use their card — but trust us, they are.

With the Greenlight debit card and app, your kids can:

  • Set savings goals.
  • Learn to make trade-off decisions. Keychain or shark-tooth necklace? It’s their call.
  • Earn allowance through chores. Cool fact: Greenlight kids who earn allowance save 26% more. Woohoo!

A few other things you can do in your app:

  • Manage access to ATMs. Are they withdrawing a bit too much? Set limits.
  • Choose stores. You decide where they can and can’t spend. Gas only? Just at restaurants? Adjust the settings in your app.
  • Get real-time notifications and monitor their spend levels.
